Faith In Action Committee
The Faith in Action Committee seeks to help Emerson UU members and friends be a positive force committed to social change in our community and our world, through education, advocacy, and direct service. Our activities include:
- Heart in the Park
- Share the Basket
- Guest at Your Table
- Ethical Eating
- Immigration Reform
- Death Penalty
- Volunteering with Cobb Christmas
- Transgender Day of Remembrance
- Earth Day
Heart in the Park
Since 2009 Emerson members and friends have met at East Cobb Park the Sunday before Valentine’s Day in a public witness in support of marriage equality. We believe that the First Principle of our faith, respecting "the inherent worth and dignity of every person," applies equally to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Please join us in standing on the side of love at the 4th Annual Heart in the Park. Wear red, bring your signs and stick around for a bowl of hot chili afterwards!

Share the Basket Program
Share the Basket is a program to live out the mission and vision of Emerson UUC and to promote greater outreach to our community and to share our resources with those who serve the most in need. One Sunday per month Emerson UUC donates half of received offerings to a pre-approved non-profit organization. On designated Share the Basket Sundays, the non-pledge collection is divided equally with the recipient organization; all donor checks shall be made out to EUUC so that a single check from Emerson can be delivered to the organization. The Faith in Action (FIA) Committee administers the Share the Basket program and recommends the recipient organizations.
Past Recipient Organizations:
-
In January 2012, Emerson UUC will collect and donate funds to the Dental Mission Trip to Panama.
-
In December 2011, Emerson UUC collected and donated $215 to Cobb Christmas, a non-profit, non-denominational organization, dedicated to helping the low-income and working-poor families of Cobb County during the holiday season.
-
In November 2011, Emerson UUC collected and donated $230 to No More Deaths, which is a ministry of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson. No More Deaths' mission is to end death and suffering on the U.S./Mexico border through civil initiative: the conviction that people of conscience must work openly and in community to uphold fundamental human rights.
-
In October 2011, Emerson UUC collected and donated approximately $600 to MUST Ministries of Marietta, GA. MUST Ministries is a faith-based organization that provides services to persons and families in crisis.
Nominations
Do you know of a non-profit group or program that's helping the most in need in the greater Atlanta area, the nation or the world? Are they attending to a segment of our society that is usually overlooked by more established charities and programs? Are they a recognized non-profit? Then why not recommend them as a candidate for the Emerson UUC's Share the Basket Program? Please complete the nomination form and submit to Joe Tomichek or Karen Cox via email or in-person.
A Word About Pledge Payments
Checks addressed to Emerson UUC that are marked as a “Pledge” payment will not be included in the program. Checks intended for the recipient charity given during the Share the Basket offertory should be made out to "Emerson UU Congregation” with "Share the Basket" in the "memo" line. Checks written to the Emerson UUC will be acknowledged as a tax deductible donation.
Earth Day
Each spring Emerson's Terra Team organizes activities and events in support of Earth Day and our 7th UU Principle of "Respecting the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."
