Unplug the Christmas Machine Reverend Jeff Jones
As we prepare for the holidays, it is time to plan with intention how we wish to celebrate them. Perhaps it is time to unplug the Christmas Machine.
We will collect a Share the basket offering for dental project. Each January members from Emerson and about 25 other people from the nonprofit humanitarian group, Volunteers in Dental Service, Inc., go to Central America on an outreach program to help those in need. We help address the dental needs of small villages and communities.
This year we will be returning to the small town of Tole, Panama. Tole, is about a 7 hour bus ride north of Panama City. The people there and in the surrounding areas are mostly from one of the last indigenous tribes called the Ngobe. The need in this small corner of Panama is overwhelming. For the vast majority of these people we are the only dentist they will ever see. Last year if you woke up before dawn you could see flashlights in the distant of family’s walking to reach us to try to get in line to be seen. By the time we were ready to see patients there were more people waiting than we could possibly see in a day, and yet they waited for hours just in case….
Members of Volunteers in Dental Service pay 100% of their own expenses. It was with your generous donations that last year we were able to help pay for supplies and equipment to provide fillings, tooth and root tip extractions and root canals to 575 people in less than 5 days. Most of these were children and emergencies. So, here we are again asking for your help in letting them know someone cares about them. Without you, this work would not be possible.
