Could Emerson be your spiritual home? If so, we would love you to join our vibrant community.

Deciding to become a member of this congregation is an invitation to participate at  a deeper level in the creation of the community and the ministries we promote.  As a member you will be able to have a voice in the direction of the congregation, take on leadership roles and participate in congregational meetings and decisions.

When you first come to Emerson as as a guest someone from our membership team will be designated as your Chalice Guide. This person will be in touch with you and is someone you can contact at any time if you have questions about Emerson, Unitarian Universalism or how to get involved. They will also support you through the membership journey.

Our hope and expectation is that our members:

  • Explore their personal path of spiritual growth,  deepening their connection to a meaningful life rich in conscious practices that support their journey. These may  include: attending worship, exploring faith exploration opportunities, developing daily practices, explore meaning through a variety of inspirational materials and experiences.
  • Support the congregation. Emerson requires the dedication of volunteers to support its functioning. It is expected that members will take a turn in committee roles and pledge financial support to the congregation on a yearly basis.
  • Live our values in the world. Emerson offers opportunities to get involved in a variety of social justice and action initiatives. It is hoped that members work in at least one area of justice contributing to the creation of a more just, sustainable and peaceful world.

The Membership Journey

Becoming a member is a path of discernment and commitment for each individual. The following is the process for becoming a member.

  • Attend worship and/or other offerings at the congregation. Get to know us and let us get to know you!
  • Attend the special membership classes offered during Faith Exploration time. These include:
  • Meet the Minister and Discover UU and our Principles and Practices classes. Each of these are offered monthly.
  • Then attend the Pathways to Membership class lead every few months. These classes are designed to help you reflect on your spiritual journey, teach about the history and principles of Unitarian Universalism and introduce you to various leaders and offerings at Emerson.
  • Complete a Membership Enrollment form to indicate your intent to join.
  • Make a financial pledge in support of the church.
  • Attend a New Member Joining Ceremony on Sunday during worship.
  • This is where you will sign the book of names alongside others who have joined this church since 1982, and become official!

Welcome to Emerson!
