What We Worship

Since Unitarian Universalists do not all agree on the existence or nature of God, Goddess, sacred deity, or Higher Consciousness, then, what do we worship? This is a great question that many folks ask when they arrive at a UU congregation. In short the answer beckons back to the origins of the word worship which comes from the Old English, weorþscipe, meaning to venerate or honor. We choose to take that translation further and say that: to ‘worship’ is to declare worth

As Unitarian Universalists and friends of UU, we find great worth in our presence together, our shared values, and the work in which we dedicate ourselves to create a more peaceful and loving world. Our worship is a time to celebrate all of these as we pause from life’s activities and sit together in the presence of the great mystery of life.

The point of our worship is not to find consensus in thought but to find community through love.

When we are present for each other as we celebrate or wrestle with ideas expressed, feel the sacred or profane in the music shared or find comfort or restlessness in prayers and meditation, we do so out of a desire to grow, challenge ourselves and celebrate the magnificent diversity of the human experience.

Come, declare the inherent worth of all through worship!
